Knitwear designer Gudrun Johnston never ceases to surprise me beginning with the first time I ever met her.

As we both remember in our chat today in Morning on the Dock, I had not met Gudrun when she first came to teach at Squam. We had spoken on the phone and because she was offering a very traditional class on how to knit a classic Hap shawl, and because on the phone she had a strong Scottish brogue, for some reason (maybe because of Mrs. Doubtfire?) I imagined she was a white-haired woman in her 60s.

Ha. Instead, who walks into the room on the first day of the retreat but this wildly sexy woman with short red hair, fabulous earrings, the most darling chic handknits who looked barely 30 years old.

And in our call today, despite the fact that we have known each other for years now, I still learned so much about Gudrun that I never knew — most particuarly that she came to knitting late in life and is pretty much entirely self-taught. Wild, right?

Take a listen and see if you don’t learn something new, too as this marvelously talented woman shares her yarn journey which now has her offering one-of-a-kind retreats to Shetland with her dear friend Mary Jane Mucklestone.
