CROCHITI = crochet + grafitti
You might not use that word to describe it, perhaps the easier way to refer to this fabulous street art is simply yarn bombing. Whatever you call it, LONDON KAYE is rocking it big time. Below is a video of the “ugly sweater” she made for Miller Lite beer that was prominently displayed in NYC’s Times Square this time last year.
SO cool. And? A freaky boatload of work,
not to mention football fields of yarn!
In our conversation above, London shares what it was like behind the scenes for that particular project as well as what life is like for a full-time crochiti artist.
With chain link fence as her canvas,
a personal philosophy to make the world
a better place and a passion for crochet,
London is taking this art form to
new heights all the while keeping life
loose, fun and sparking inspiration
with her playful installations wherever she goes.
As you will hear in the conversation above, this approach to outdoor art may appear whimsical but it is the result of keen focus and sustained commitment which is balanced out by London’s light-hearted attitude and experimental approach. Though she has lived in Brooklyn for over nine years now, London grew up in California and you can see that sunlit vibe in her work and her personality.
And, as she lets slip at the end of the call, London will be offering a workshop at Squam in 2017! So there’s a bit of a teaser for you about what’s ahead. (FYI, full details of all 2017 programs will be posted first week of December) For now, sit back, grab your needles and listen along to a rather magical adventure.
