“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”
– Martha Graham
As Martha Graham wrote to her beloved friend so many years ago, there is a wellspring of creative vitality and ease within each of us and that is what we will be connecting to in this gentle and nurturing workshop. We will be lead through a series of prompts that will allow us to access our fullest creative flow.
Our body IS the channel to the divine life force that flows through us and yet, so many of us default to using the mind —trying to think our way into the connection—and then wonder why we are feeling lost, ungrounded, anxious, or without spark.
We will explore the power of our voice, as voice is one of the most healing instruments that exists: our own unique sound; our own personal signature. Together, we will dissolve any barriers/judgements that have crushed or silenced our voice.
Throughout the day will be invited to release the busy mind and return to our intuitive guidance. We will dial in a deeper awareness of our unique source of creative vision, ideas and inspiration through a series of exercises including guided meditation, movement and focus on breath. This will allow us to access the parts of ourselves that are invisible and intangible—parts of us that are always present but take a bit of intention and guidance to tap into.
When our time together has come to a close, we will have the skills to continue cultivating this connection—to inner wisdom, inner ease, and vitality—and carry it back into our daily life and, most importantly, into our creative work. We will have the lived experience that our body is the ultimate channel for the art we produce.
