As artists we want to pour our feelings into what we create—but sometimes, we hold back, we don’t dive deep into the full self-expression that is unique to us. There are any number of reasons why this can happen, but one of the easiest and most fun ways to break free and create work that reflects your personality—is to play with color.
Color—whether we are cognizant of it or not—
is what we respond to most deeply in a painting.
Every color is evocative and it is personal. One person’s blue is another person’s purple. What is key in playing with color is making it express how you feel.
At the start of class, we will review the importance of value, saturation, and temperature alone—and, in relation to one another. We will have some fun exploring how color changes and ways to alter its effect depending on what color you place it next to.
Once we are warmed up with color, we will dive into working with shapes. Equally important for impact, shapes convey a wide range of sensation. Going small, going big, sharp edges, flowing lines, repetitive motifs—all of these choices influence the painting and altering the texture of shapes can transform a painting from an ‘eh’ to a WOW.
There will be a number of demos, but they will be short so that you have the majority of class time to play and explore these ideas into a painting that feels true for you.
Yildiz will be on hand to offer guidance and support wherever needed, but mostly she will be ensuring you keep a light touch so that a playful, intuitive approach flows through you and into your work.
