Does a table full of wildly assorted paper ephemera, pens, pencils, markers, stamps draw you like a moth to light? Then get ready for a day of creative play like no other. It’s one thing to make a singular image using collage materials, it’s an entirely different game to focus on a theme, idea or image and expand it into a zine.
Sure you have seen zines here and there*, but have you ever set out to create one? Maybe you thought they looked too simple—ha! Just wait, they will hook you in with all the possibilities they offer and you will find you simply have to make more.
*Of course, if you are not familiar with this fabulous rogue art genre,
there is a terrific explanation here: a short history of zines.
Making a zine is liberating
There are many approaches to zine making as it is an alternative art form with roots in resistance to the limits of traditional publishing. Zines are an expression of anarchy. No rules. The sky is the limit—but of course, all of that can be a bit intimidating, so in this class, Tona will get you grounded with her tried and true ways of layering and assembling your book. Since zines celebrate the art of self-publishing, makers can get quite inventive with how the piece is bound—as well as how large or small you want to make it, the focus of its content and all the wild ways you choose to make it decidedly your own.
Making a zine can amplify
your creative work
in wondrous and
unexpected ways.
This is a workshop about creating magic. There are many aspects to love about making a zine but chief among them is that zines are low stakes and high reward. This is a time to dive deep into your passions and explore creative possibilities on the page. What have you wanted to do and never done? Dare to be curious. A playful approach in life turns ideas into realities.
However, if you are feeling timid and don’t want to conjure up your inner genie which is ready to get all its messages and ideas onto the page, don’t worry—you can go diver deep or swim shallow. Your choice, ever and always.
What is for certain is that you will discover the alchemy involved as you go through the process of this do-it-yourself mini magazine/book. And be ye warned: zine making has been shown to be highly addictive. Often you cannot just stop at one. See for yourself . . . they are irresistible fun!
